The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is expected to meet Tuesday to discuss the ongoing humanitarian situation in Ukraine, following a request for the meeting by France and Mexico.
The meeting comes as Ukrainian and Russian representatives meet in Turkey in the latest round of in-person talks aimed at ending the war.
Ahead of those negotiations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country was prepared to declare its neutrality, as Moscow demanded, and was open to compromise over the contested eastern region of Donbas.
However, he warned the war still continued, and even as negotiators assembled Russian forces hit an oil depot in western Ukraine and a government building in the south.
Last Thursday, two resolutions on the situation were presented to the Security Council. The first urged Russia to immediately stop its military operations in Ukraine, while a resolution from South Africa focused on humanitarian issues — with a focus on the provision of humanitarian aid and the establishment of humanitarian corridors.
