Pope Francis visited a hospital in Rome on Saturday, where children who fled the war in Ukraine with their families are being treated.
Nineteen Ukrainian children were being treated at two branches of the Bambino Gesu hospital for cancer and neurological conditions, or were injured by explosions, the Vatican said.
The visit comes after Pope Francis spoke out against the war in a message to a church conference in Slovakia on Friday.
“The blood and tears of children, the suffering of women and men who are defending their land or fleeing from bombardments shakes our conscience,” he said.
