Russia-Ukraine conflict: UN nuclear watchdog says situation is “dire”

1 min read

Speaking about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog said in regards to nuclear facilities in the eastern European country, the situation is “dire.”

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director-general Rafael Grossi said Thursday he could not confirm reports power had been restored at Chornobyl.

One problem for the IAEA, he said, is that the agency relies on thorough information to safeguard the nuclear power plants, including Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia.

“What we have is actually a degrading situation, which is a concerning situation for us because gradually we are losing. It doesn’t mean that we are losing everything, but we are losing a significant amount of information,” he said.

Grossi has proposed three-way talks at Chornobyl, where Russia has seized a radioactive waste facility near the now-defunct power plant, which was the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986.
