Countries urged Russia on Monday at the United Nations Security Council meeting to allow safe passage to civilians in besieged Ukrainian cities and aid to areas of fighting, saying the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine was rapidly deteriorating.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Sergiy Kysltsya said Russia wreaked further violence when it didn’t respect an agreement to maintain a humanitarian corridor for aid and refugees. However, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya blamed what he called Ukrainian neo-Nazis for the collapse of the corridor.
The United States and Albania requested the meeting, which will hear briefings by UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths and Catherine Russell, executive director of the UN children’s agency UNICEF.
