Russia-Ukraine conflict: Mariupol medics treat patients, residents salvage food amid shelling

2 min read

Medics in Mariupol continued to treat patients, using cellular phone lights and other tools to care for injured residents while shelling continued to hit the snow-covered town on Friday.

Dr. Evgeniy Dubox said that the stress has been difficult for patients and workers alike.

“We continue working without electricity and heat,” he said. “We’ve worked more than a week without a break.”

Some of the injured include Ukrainian soldiers like Svyatoslav Borodin. He’s hopeful Russia and Ukraine will come to some sort of agreement.

“I had big expectations on that negotiation, on the first round and second,” he said.

Elsewhere in Mariupol, residents lined up at a grocery store but had difficulty getting supplies on Thursday. A day later, people were salvaging food from a supermarket that was on fire following shelling.

A partial ceasefire to allow civilians to leave Mariupol and Volnovakha was approved by Russia’s defence ministry early Saturday, according to state media. However, Ukraine reported that the Russian side was “not holding to the ceasefire and has continued firing on Mariupol itself and on its surrounding area.” Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk also told reporters Saturday that Russia had breached the deal in Volnovakha as well.

Russian media outlet RIA Novosti carried a Russian defence ministry claim that the firing came from inside both cities against Russian positions, with the ministry accusing Ukrainian “nationalists” of preventing civilians from leaving.
