State of the Union 2022: Joe Biden addresses joint session of Congress | FULL

2 min read

U.S. President Joe Biden delivered his first State of the Union address on Tuesday, vowing to check Russian aggression in Ukraine, fight inflation in the U.S., and continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic even as the latter fades from public attention.

Biden used the address to announce the U.S. would be banning all Russian planes from its airspace. The president also declared that he and all members of Congress were joined “with an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny.” He also asked lawmakers to stand and salute Ukrainians, prompting members of both parties to give a standing ovation, including one directed at Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, who was watching from the balcony as First Lady Jill Biden’s guest.

The speech was split between attention to the war abroad and worries at home. Even before the Russian invasion, the U.S. was faced with skyrocketing energy costs and rising inflation, and a COVID-19 pandemic that still was hurting families and the country’s economy.

The president outlined plans to address inflation by reinvesting in American manufacturing capacity, speeding supply chains and reducing the burden on childcare and eldercare on workers.
